Data on backward taluks to be updated

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: A total of 114 taluks in the State will be brought under the Special Development Plan formulated by the High-power Committee for Redressal of Regional Imbalances.

Shashil Namoshi, chairman of the committee formed to implement the recommendations of the Nanjundappa panel on regional imbalances, told presspersons here on Saturday that a sum of Rs. 31,000 crore (at 2002 prices) was required for the purpose. The amount should be raised by five per cent to provide for escalation of cost over the past six years.

Mr. Namoshi said the Nanjundappa committee had applied 35 parameters to arrive at that figure and divided the identified taluks into three categories. The implementation committee headed by him met here on Saturday. In the State Budget for 2007-08, Rs. 1,571 crore was earmarked for the Special Development Plan.

The Government spent Rs. 933 crore of the amount, which was 59 per cent of the outlay. Mr. Namoshi pointed out that the amount had been increased to Rs. 2,547 crore this year.

The committee felt the need to update data as well the level of backwardness of the taluks. Therefore, it had formed a committee comprising Panchamukhi, Abdul Azim and Chaya Dorankar, he said.

The committee had decided to go in for detailed reviews of the departments implementing the Special Development Plan to gauge the progress and provide guidance, he added.
