Praja Rajyam to give more seats to women

HYDERABAD: Praja Rajyam (PR) president K. Chiranjeevi on Sunday declared that he would give more seats in the general elections to women than any other political party.

As if to prove this point and also to show his commitment for bringing in social justice and to empower women, he introduced Munemma, a daily wage labourer and member of a self-help group (SHG) from Vakadu mandal in Nellore district .

Shaking hands with the young woman on the stage, he proudly showed her off to a gathering primarily comprising women who had come to attend a meeting called by Mahila Varathi and said she should be an inspiration. He added that he too was motivated by the fiery speeches by this tribal woman hailing from Pambali village and belonging to the Yanadi community.

Mr. Chiranjeevi regretted that even educated people were getting rid of female children, either leveraging technology to snuff the life even while in the womb, or dumping them in garbage bins. On the other hand was the rising numbers of girl children being sold away, he said. When PR comes to power, it will have a comprehensive legislation in place, providing for basic education and health and one that would be implemented strictly, he said.

‘Sensitivity needed’

Earlier, Munemma categorically said men clad in safari suits and women wearing jewels were least likely to improve awareness among rural folk and motivate them to vote for PR.

“What we need is to display the sensitivity required to communicate to the rural poor that having understood their everyday problems, the party had the confidence of improving their lot. Only when we do it will they vote for Chiranjeevi,” she said to applause.
