JNU students form joint struggle committee

NEW DELHI: The University General Body Meeting of the student community at Jawaharlal Nehru University here has decided to form a joint struggle committee to decide on the future course of action in the wake of the Supreme Court’s stay on the students’ union polls.The committee comprising two representatives each from all the students’ organisations will be led by the incumbent JNU students’ union. At the UGBM that began on Saturday night and continued till Sunday morning, many students expressed their angst against the stay on the JNUSU election process. A resolution was passed reinstating the outgoing JNUSU council for the next three months. “As per the JNUSU constitution, the term of the students’ union can be extended in extraordinary circumstances. The UGBM has fixed a tenure of three months for the existing JNUSU council and its further extension, if needed, will be decided at another UGBM,” said Netajee Abhinandan, a member of the joint struggle committee. Speaking on the newly-formed committee, JNUSU president Sandeep Singh said: “Representatives from all organisations will be a part of the committee. The Youth for Equality and the Bahujan Students’ Front will not be a part of it.” While the BSF said it had its “own reasons” for not joining the new committee, the YFE has maintained that though it “has respect for JNU’s peculiar election culture”, it endorsed the view of the Lyngdoh Committee.
