Thrissur
From medicine to art: Dr. Alyona Earath with her paintings on cushion. Thrissur: Paintings on fabric by Dr. Alyona Earath evoke Russian poems, folk tales and stories from ancient civilizations. Though started as a hobby, fabric painting has become a passion for Alyona, a Russian doctor who came to India after her marriage to Dr. Manoj Earath of Thrissur. Her husband is working in a private hospital here. As language became a barrier in practising medicine here, Dr. Alyona, hails from Kolchugino, near Moscow, took to painting on silks, canvasses, glass and fabrics using acrylic and water colour to get over the boredom. Later she concentrated on fabric painting. She painted on saris, shirts, churidhars and cushions. An exhibition of her paintings, including one about Radha and Krishna was held here on Sunday. Each of her paintings has a story to tell. While the painting ‘Fire bird’ tells a Russian folk tale, the painting ‘Winter evening’ is based on a poem by Alexander Pushkin. Another painting ‘Reef’ is on a poem by Linda Weischedel. Though she featured Russian characters in her painting initially, she switched over to colours and moods of Kerala later. Mayan Civilization, Egyptian History and Warli folk paintings also became subjects for Dr. Alyona’s paintings.
