Clear skies help in draining water

LONG WAY AHEAD: A lot of work awaits Chennai Corporation, which began work to patch stretches damaged in recent rains. A scene on Dr.Ambedkar College Road, Ganesapuram, on Saturday.

Chennai: The clear skies on Saturday brought some relief from inundated roads after the very recent heavy rain.

Chennai Corporation workers used motor pumps to drain water from inundated roads.

Mayor M. Subramanian inspected the draining of water at T. Nagar. He said that G.N. Chetty Road was water-logged as new stormwater drains in concrete were being constructed there. The new drains would replace the older brick ones. About 10 motors were used to pump out water from the G.N. Chetty Road. The Mayor also visited residential areas in Velachery, including AGS Colony, Nethaji Colony, Lakshmi Nagar, Ram Nagar, M.G.R. Nagar and Andal Nagar.

About 1,000 workers were deputed to patch roads that had been damaged by the rains. Each Corporation zone has been given 10 barrels of bitumen emulsion to patch roads using cold mix technology.

Ennore High Road, Tiruvottiyur High Road, S.M. Chetty Road, Basin Bridge Road, Prakasam Road, NSC Bose Road, Perambur High Road, Konnur High Road and a few other roads in north Chennai were patched. In south Chennai, work was undertaken on Valluvar Kottam High Road, Sterling Road, Triplicane High Road, Gandhi Irwin Road, Cathedral Road, Pantheon Road, Usman Road, G.N. Chetty Road, Velachery Main Road, R.K. Mutt Road, Greenways Road and Santhome High Road.

The Corporation also conducted 15 medical camps in various parts of the city. Health officials examined about 2,200 persons for water-borne or vector-borne diseases.

Traffic was heavy on Arcot Road and Inner Ring Road as thousands of people travelling out of the city for Deepavali used the route to reach the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus in Koyambedu.

“It took me two hours to reach Koyambedu from Valasaravakkam as vehicles were moving at snail’s pace,” said Rajaram, a bus commuter. Motorists on Arcot Road also faced problems owing to water flowing out from inundated stormwater drains. People had placed small boulders in the potholes on Arcot Road to alert unwary motorists about the cavernous dents. Workers were deputed to clear the drains of blocks.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted general cloudy skies with spells of rain or thundershowers on Sunday.
