It’s an inspiring experience for aspirants

EXPOSURE: The victorious athletic team in Ariyalur.
ARIYALUR: The three-day State junior athletics championship, which concluded at the District Stadium here on Saturday, was not affected by the monsoon, thankfully. But it rained records at the meet.
As many as 26 new meet records were set in the three eventful days. The meet, organised by the Perambalur District Athletics Association (PDAA), attracted participation from all over the State. Watching the athletes perform should have been a great experience for the aspirants in Ariyalur district.
“The overwhelming response for the event was encouraging. More than winning, it’s the will to take part that mattered most,” said the PDAA president S.S. Siva Sankar.
The meet that was conducted in the under-20, 18, 16 and 14 age categories for boys and girls saw participation of more than 2,500 athletes. “Hosting such meets could be the ideal way to promote athletics in the district. There are talented youngsters in the rural parts and it is important to give them exposure,” felt the former international high jumper, N. Annavi.
The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), with Sports Hostels, sprints and jumps academy, throws academy, middle and long distance academy from all the districts in its fold, won the overall championship.
Inspector General of Police, Special Task Force and Vice-president of the Tamil Nadu Athletics Association, C. Sylendra Babu gave away the prizes in the presence of the Joint Executive president, Grasim Industries, S. Natarajan. The Regional Senior Manager, Tiruchi unit of SDAT, N. Sundaram and the former international triple jumper K.S. Mohammed Nizamudeen commended the winners.
