Wawrinka confirms participation

Chennai: World No. 12 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland confirmed his participation for the Chennai Open 2009, on Friday.

The 14th edition of $450,000 event will take place at the Nungambakkam Stadium from January 5 to 11.

Wawrinka, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 9 this June, said: “this will be my first visit to India and I am anxiously looking forward to playing at the Chennai Open.

“I hope to give a good and consistent performance here.”

Good sign

Tournament Director Fernando Soler said that roping in a consistently improving player like Wawrinka would augur well for the tournament.

“Wawrinka is an exciting prospect and Chennaities will enjoy watching him.

“We at IMG are eagerly looking forward to hosting him and making it a trip worth remembering for him.”
