Jayalalithaa dubs Vaiko’s arrest political vendetta

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Thursday condemned the arrest of MDMK general secretary Vaiko and the party’s presidium chairman M. Kannappan, describing it as an act of political vendetta.

In a statement here, she said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s action was to protect his government and not based on nationalistic fervour.

A protest was organised by film industry people in Rameswaram against attacks on Tamils in Sri Lanka in which film directors Bharati Raja, Ameer and Seeman spoke against the sovereignty of the country. The protest was organised by Rama Narayanan. Instead of taking action against the film industry people, Mr. Karunanidhi had acted in haste by arresting Mr. Vaiko and Mr. Kannappan, she said.

Similarly, on January 25 this year at his party conference, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan spoke in support of the LTTE, and Vanniya Arasu smuggled arms and ammunition for the LTTE. So far no action had been taken against them, she pointed out.

There could not be two sets of laws, one for those supporting the ruling party and another for those opposing the activities of the ruling party, she said.

The Chief Minister himself had written a poem condoling the death of a leader of a banned organisation. Hence the State government should be dismissed, she added.
