Zaheer fined

Mohali: Indian paceman Zaheer Khan was fined 80 per cent of his match fee for a level II offence in the ICC Code of Conduct by Match Referee Chris Broad, here, on Tuesday. Broad said Zaheer “circled the batsman (Matthew Hayden) and shouted in an abusive manner” after the Australian opener was adjudged leg-before to Harbhajan Singh on Monday.

Not acceptable

Said Broad, “Clearly, this sort of behaviour is not acceptable at any level — it showed a lack of respect for a player who had been dismissed. Respect for the opposition was something that we talked about in the pre-series meeting I had with the captains so it was disappointing that Zaheer behaved in this way.” Before announcing his verdict, Broad took note of the fact that Zaheer, “pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and was also apologetic while also promising not to repeat the offence.” — Special Correspondent
