Steps to tackle rain-related problems
Staff Reporter
Chennai: Control rooms in the State Relief Commissioner’s Office and in all Collectorates have been activated to respond to any emergencies during the monsoon.
Chief Secretary K.S. Sripathi on Tuesday convened a meeting with the Secretaries to the State and heads of departments to take stock of monsoon preparedness measures. He also directed Collectors to closely monitor vulnerable areas such as river banks, culverts, bridges and tank bunds to respond quickly to any contingency.
The Highways, the PWD and local bodies have been instructed to immediately restore roads, river banks and tank bunds in case of breaches. These agencies would pool manpower and materials for relief and restoration work. The Fisheries Department has been asked to coordinate with the Coast Guard, the Navy, the Collectors and the Indian Meteorological Department to ensure the safety of fishermen. Mr. Sripathi directed that special attention be given to public health to prevent epidemics. The Health Department and the Veterinary Services Department would stock medicines in all its facilities.
