ARUVIKKARA: A series of malfunctions at the 72 mld treatment plant of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) here have caused a steep fall, since Sunday, in the quantity and quality of drinking water pumped to the reservoir at Peroorkada.

Following a ‘lightning inspection’ of the facility on Tuesday afternoon by KWA Managing Director Suresh Babu and Technical Member T.P. Mohanlal, the plant’s Executive Engineer and Assistant Executive Engineer were placed under suspension.

The immediate cause for the fall in water supply was the ‘choking’ of all six filter beds in the treatment plant. These filter beds were not washed and cleaned of silt fast enough, a top KWA official told The Hindu. On Tuesday night an extra pump was used to load water on to the ‘back wash’ tank in the plant to clean the filter beds.

The clari-floculation tanks at the plant where the raw water is allowed time to settle and ‘clarify’ have not been working properly for many months now. This coupled with the fact that the turbidity of the water in the Karamana river increased manifold following heavy rain during the past few days led to the rapid choking of the plant’s filter beds.

Even though the plant is scheduled for rehabilitation under the second phase of the JBIC scheme, the Crisis Management Group of the KWA had, two months ago, okayed the repair of the clari-floculation tanks at a cost of Rs.10 lakhs a tank. A tender for this work is yet to be announced. The KWA top brass have blamed the suspended engineers for this delay.

Emergency steps have been initiated to set right the flaws in the plant and to normalise water supply to the city, a KWA pressnote said.
