BJP releases first list for Chhattisgarh, drops 18 of its 51 sitting MLAs

NEW DELHI: Chhattisgarh’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday dropped 18 of its 51 sitting MLAs as it announced the first list of candidates for next month’s State Assembly polls in the State.

Chief Minister Raman Singh has been shifted to Rajnandgaon constituency. He had contested from Dungargaon in the last elections.

“We have decided not to field 18 of the sitting MLAs in Chhattisgarh. This decision has been taken as per the political and social realities. Out of this, three MLAs have lost their seats due to the delimitation process,” party general secretary Ananth Kumar told reporters here releasing the first list of candidates for the State.

Chhattisgarh has 29 reserved seats for Schedule Tribes but the first list of 58 candidates announced on Tuesday has 32 ST candidates, he added.

Remaining candidates

The names of the remaining 12 candidates for the 90-member Assembly will be announced soon and this too might see some of the present legislators being dropped, the party said.

Tuesday’s list included seven women candidates and two sitting MPs (Bilaspur and Raigarh).

The meeting of the Central Election Committee was chaired by party chief Rajnath Singh and attended by senior leader and party’s Prime Ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani and other senior leaders including Jaswant Singh, Sushma Swaraj, M. Venkaiah Naidu and Ramlal, organisational secretary, among others.
