BANGALORE: A 22-year-old law student suffered burns after being attacked with acid allegedly by her childhood friend, after she spurned his marriage proposal, on Tuesday.
The victim, Karthika, a native of Tiruvananthapuram and a final year LLB student of Bishop Cottons Women’s Law College here, suffered 20 per cent burns in the attack that took place in the Holy Trinity Church compound near Mahatma Gandhi Road. Karthika was on her way to college from Trinity Hostel (behind the church), where she was staying for the last one month.
“Rakesh, who knew Karthika’s schedule, was waiting for her at the parking lot. As she emerged from the hostel with her friends, Rakesh, who was wearing a helmet, started moving towards the group. All of a sudden, he threw a bottle of acid towards her,” said R. Johnson, a member of the church committee.
“Karthika was reading a book while walking. Her friends, who saw the bottle being hurled, moved away following which she also turned. In the melee, she suffered burns in her neck, back and legs,” he added. The hostel authorities rushed her to a private hospital on Bannerghatta Road.
Karthika told the Ulsoor police that she was being pestered by Rakesh, also from Thiruvananthapuram, to marry him. She also said Rakesh was claiming to have been employed in the “cyber department” at the Jalahalli Air Force Station. Further, he tracked her despite her having changed her mobile phone number, and also visited the hostel frequently. Rakesh had even met Karthika’s parents at Thiruvananthapuram, who also refused his proposal.
The police said Rakesh used sulphuric acid to attack Karthika.
