Arjun and Amar Muralidharan shine

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Swimmers from the Border Security Force upstaged their rivals from the Central Reserve Protection Force on the second day of the 57th all-India police aquatics meet by accounting for three of the four gold medals decided at the Water Works swimming pool here on Tuesday.

The arch-rivalry between the two sides also produced two meet records during the course of the day, with Arjun Muralidharan (BSF) and Amar Muralidharan (CRPF) hogging the limelight with stellar performances in the 400m individual medley and 50m butterfly respectively.

Arjun was way ahead of the rest of the field as he pushed himself into the front and stayed there to return at a time of 4:43.58 to better the existing record in the 400m individual medley of 4:47.69 set by Kailash Nath (CRPF) exactly ten years ago.

Amar, later, swam in a splendid 26.19s to erase Arjun’s record of 26.43s in the 50m butterfly and thus deny the latter the satisfaction of finishing with a golden record double. Arjun had come in at 26:31, a better show than his 2006 record show.

The results (all finals): Men: 200m freestyle: 1. Mandar Anand Devase (BSF), 1:59.29, 2. Arjun Muralidharan (BSF), 1.59.59, 3. Amar Muralidharan 1:59.51. 400m individual medley: 1. Arjun Muralidharan (BSF), 4:43.58 (New Meet Record; Old Record – 4:47.69, Kailash Nath, 1998). 50m butterfly: 1. Amar Muralidharan (CRPF), 26.19s (NMR – OR – 26.43, Arjun Muralidharan, BSF, 2006), 2. Arjun Muralidharan (BSF), 26.31s, 3. Elvis Ali Hazarika (CRPF), 27.16s.

4 x 200m freestyle relay: 1. BSF, 8.15.08, 2. CRPF, 8.17.13, 3. CISF, 9:05.47.

Diving: 1m springboard: 1. Ramit Datta (CRPF), 284.15 points, 2. Himanshu Sharma (BSF), 270.80, 3. Pradeep Kumar (BSF), 247.25. — Special Correspondent
