KOCHI: Kerala defeated Karnataka 21-18, 21-14 and entered the boys’ semifinals of the 23rd National junior tennikoit championship in New Delhi on Tuesday. However, Kerala made its exit in the girls section, losing to Karnataka 21-10, 19-21, 19-21 in the quarterfinals. Srikanth winsSrikanth (CET) won the men’s singles title in the Thiruvananthapuram district table tennis championships at the COPS hall here on Tuesday. Srikanth rallied to beat Renjith Binny (COPS) 8-11, 4-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8 in the final. Lakshmi Vijayan (YMCA) won the women’s singles title after defeating Anjali S. Inter-school footballAn all-Kerala football tournament for ICSE schools, organised by the Don Bosco Senior Secondary School, begins at Vaduthala on Wednesday. Former football star M.M. Jacob will inaugurate the three-day event tomorrow. Mr. K.V. Thomas, MLA, will be the chief guest at the closing function on Friday. Basketball tournamentThe Mahatma Gandhi University inter-collegiate men’s basketball championship begins at the FISAT Stadium at Mookkannur, near Angamaly, on Thursday. Eight teams — defending champion St. Berchman’s College (Changanassery), Sacred Heart (Thevara), St. Albert’s (Ernakulam), Mar Athanasius (Kothamangalam), Marian (Kuttikanam), Amal Jyothi (Kanjirappally), Mangalam (Kottayam) and host FISAT College, will figure in the two-day event. Mr. G. Kishore, Kerala State Sports Council Secretary, will inaugurate the new basketball court and Prince Chandy, Assistant Commissioner of Customs, will open the tournament. State basketballWith new floodlights and much enthusiasm, Kottayam gets ready for the 53rd Kerala State senior basketball championship which begins at the Nehru Stadium here on October 27. The championship, for men and women, comes to the district after nearly 25 years. The new permanent floodlights have been installed with assistance from MP K. Suresh Kurup’s local area development fund. Mr. Kurup will inaugurate the floodlights and V.N. Vasavan, MLA, will open the championship. Gymnastic trialsThe trials to select the State schools gymnastics teams for the 54th National School Games championships will be held at the SAI Centre in Thalassery on October 26. Selection trials will be conducted in under-19 and under-17 categories for both boys and girls. Those interested should report at the venue at 8 a.m. with eligibility certificates duly signed by the respective school principals. Only students studying in State syllabus are eligible to take part. Aerobics championshipsThe 27th State senior, junior and sub-junior gymnastics and aerobics championships will be held at the SAI Centre, Thalassery on October 25 and 26. All gymnasts taking part in the meet should report at the venue before 8 a.m. The trials to select the sub-junior State team for the all-India meet, which is to be held in Thiruvananthapuram, will be held on October 25, said a release from the Kerala State Gymnastics Association.
