Mumbai: Opener Rahil Shaikh (89) and middle-order batsman Nikhil Patil (75) scored fine half-centuries as Vijay Manjrekar XI reached a modest 246 for eight in the first innings against Dattu Phadkar XI, on the opening day of the 23rd Sportstar Trophy Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) under-19 selection trial tournament here on Tuesday. Comfortably placed at 167 for two after 50 overs, Manjrekar XI lost its way in the second half of the day. Shaikh struck seven fours and two sixes, while Patil hit eight fours. They added 97 runs for the third wicket. Pandit’s adviceEarlier, after presenting caps and shirts to the players at the inauguration, Chandrakant Pandit, former Test cricketer and Director MCA Academy advised the players to make the most of the opportunity provided by Sportstar and the MCA by learning to graft in a four-day game. “Any cricketer can play a 50 and 20-over game. But a four-day game is the real test for a batsman and bowler. “You should play the match like a one-innings game and make it difficult for the opponent to win. Pitch conditions change over a period of four days and this tournament is meant to help you prepare for BCCI’s Cooch Behar Trophy. This tournament has given many cricketers to Mumbai and a few of them have played for India. All of you should play a big role in the development of Mumbai cricket,” he said. The scores: Vijay Manjrekar XI 246 for eight (Rahil Shaikh 89, Nikhil Patil 75) vs. Dattu Phadkar XI. — Special Correspondent
