‘GAIL should step up CNG network’

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Stating that GAIL (India) had done well in laying a network of gas pipelines across the country, Petroleum Secretary R. S. Pandey has stated that the company would have to redefine its priorities and focus areas in view of the changing energy scenario and needs of the consumers of various categories.

Mr. Pandey, who had recently taken up a review of the company, said GAIL had to focus on expanding its present CNG network not only in the metros but also other parts of the country and make Piped Natural Gas (PNG) a household name.

“GAIL has to do a lot of introspection for the future as it will have to reach out to the consumers in a big way. We have to touch the common man through spreading the network of CNG in small cities along the national highways and set up CNG corridors. Similarly, PNG or city gas distribution has to be more penetrative and its reach has to be deeper in order to ensure the benefits percolate to the common man,” he added.

Mr. Pandey said he had discussed with top GAIL executives the issue of putting in place CNG corridors. “They have come up with some ideas and also on city gas distribution. GAIL is working on a road map so that CNG and PNG is extended to much larger population in a short time frame,” he remarked.

GAIL had set up a subsidiary company to take up distribution and marketing of CNG as fuel for vehicles, PNG for domestic/commercial/industrial purposes and Auto LPG as fuel for transport vehicles in the various cities of India and abroad.
