PALAKKAD: The Railways have decided to take strong action to get bomb hoax callers arrested. A railway press release here on Tuesday said bomb hoax calls had become a routine problem. The Railways had always remained a soft target for terrorists to create disturbances by the way of hoax calls. The frequent calls indicated threats to blow up railway tracks, trains and railway stations to disturb the railway transport system, the nation’s lifeline. The Railways were ready to face any such situation with the coordination of the police, the Intelligence Bureau and the State government. The release said the hoax calls resulted in the loss of working hours of passengers and security agencies, such as the Railway Protection Force and the railway police, besides having a cascading effect on the punctuality of trains. The passengers were put to inconvenience and the Railways’ image was tarnished. Sometimes, passengers had to get out of coaches to allow for a thorough search for bombs. Their action would be termed “acts of terror.” The hoax callers can be booked under sections 177 and 182(b) (six months’ imprisonment or fine, which may extend up to Rs.1,000, or both) and 505(1)(b) (three years’ imprisonment or fine or both) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 174 (two years’ imprisonment or fine of Rs.2,000 or both) of the Railway Act.
