Fight communalism, Yechury tells youth

Staff Reporter

Sitaram Yechury says communal forces are playing the worst kind of vote bank politics.

ALAPPUZHA: Communist Party of India (Marxist) Parliamentary Party leader and Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury has called upon the youth of the nation to isolate and defeat communal forces that are perpetuating violence that is eating into the vitals of the country.

Inaugurating a public meeting organised to mark the culmination of the inter-State Telangana-Vayalar Youth March of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) at Vayalar, near Cherthala, here on Tuesday, Mr. Yechury said the worst kind of vote bank politics was being played by communal forces, which were behind the violent incidents in Orissa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and other places across the country.

Those trying to consolidate Hindu votes by attacking Christians and Muslims and those who had a different agenda through terrorist blasts were actually feeding each other.

Terrorism was unacceptable, no matter which religion the terrorist belonged to. Political forces that promoted these kind of activities had to be politically isolated and defeated, Mr. Yechury said, stating that the DYFI which had its presence right from Kashmir to Kanyakumari could make this happen.

Coming down strongly on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for betraying his own assurance to Parliament on the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal, Mr. Yechury said the DYFI had to lead the movement for a political alternative that would not compromise the country’s sovereignty.

DYFI president P. Sriramakrishnan, secretary Tapan Sinha, Tamil Nadu secretary S. Kannan, Karnataka secretary Bharat Raj, Andhra Pradesh secretary Prasad, Jammu Kashmir secretary Mohammed Amin, Kerala secretary T.V. Rajesh and others also spoke.
