Raichur
Raichur: Syed Yasin, Raichur MLA, has promised that the bus stand in Raichur city will be modernised to meet the requirements of the next 15 years. Work will begin soon and will be completed before March 2010. He told The Hindu on Tuesday that at present, 709 buses, including 113 from Andhra Pradesh, were operating from the bus stand. But the bus stand was not in a position to handle the increasing vehicular traffic. Mr. Yasin said he held a meeting with NEKRTC officials on Monday to discuss the proposed expansion of the area around the bus stand, the architectural design prepared by experts and the funds available for the purpose. The NEKRTC had already finalised an action plan of Rs. 2 crore. Mr. Yasin said that a vast area behind the bus stand was covered by the moat of the fort and was being used to dump garbage, causing pollution around the bus stand. He suggested to the NEKRTC officials that the area be used for expansion of the bus stand and construction of a garden. However, additional funds were needed for the proposed expansion for which the NEKRTC had worked out a revised estimate of Rs. 3.5 crore, he said. He would urge Transport Minister R. Ashok to sanction the additional funds, he added. Mr. Yasin said the work would start in two months and would be completed in 18 months. He said there was a need to widen and upgrade the road from the tahsildar’s office to Ambedkar Circle in front of the bus stand to ensure smooth movement of buses. He said he would discuss the issue with the district administration.
