Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya, at a function in Chennai on Monday. CHENNAI: Sankara Nethralaya has planned a tele-opthalmology project for early detection and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, damage to the retina caused by diabetes, at a cost of $ 1.7 million, said its Chairman Emeritus S.S. Badrinath. He was speaking at the felicitation function organised for M.V.Raghunathan, for receiving the Lions Club International Foundation’s Ambassador of Goodwill award for his donation of $100,000 to the cause of Sight First, a programme instituted by the Lions Club to battle preventable blindness here on Monday. Stating that early detection of diabetic retinopathy could prevent blindness, Dr. Badrinath said the tele-ophthalmology project would make available treatment for people in remote areas through a spoke and hub system. Sankara Nethralaya was in the process of raising funds for the project, he said. Mr. Raghunathan, who has been a member of the Lions Club for more than three decades, urged everyone to rise above petty differences and unite for the cause of serving society. During the course of the function, a project of the Lions Club to provide a shelter and water cooler at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park at Vandalur was formally unveiled.
