Two killed seven injured in an accident

BANGALORE: Two persons, including the driver of a Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus were killed, and seven others sustained injuries in a traffic pile up involving five vehicles on the Bangalore-Mysore Highway near Bidadi, on Monday. Two lorries, one BMTC bus, a KSRTC bus and a tempo were damaged in the accident.

The Bidadi police said that the BMTC bus driver, Tammanna (50), who was injured in the accident, was taken to a private hospital near Kengeri where he died. All the seven injured were commuters of the BMTC bus. Police gave the name of the other deceased as Mohan, a journalist with a Kannada news channel, who was travelling in the KSRTC bus.

According to an eyewitness, the pile up began when a lorry bound for Bidadi applied brakes all of a sudden to avoid a car. The driver of another lorry who was moving closely behind tried to slow down, but rammed the first lorry. Thammanna, who was driving the BMTC bus, was unable to control the vehicle and hit the second vehicle in the pile up. The KSRTC bus then rammed the BMTC bus and a tempo hit the KSRTC bus. Deputy Superintendent of Police Devaraj said that there was no problem with respect to the road or any mechanical failure in the vehicles that led to the accident.

He said that the pile up could have been averted had the drivers had better control over their vehicles.

Two motorcycle-borne men relieved a woman of her gold chain worth Rs. 15,000 on 3rd Main Road in Sharada Nagar on Sunday night. The Basaveshwara Nagar police said Pratibha Rao, a resident of BEML Layout, was returning home from the market when the duo snatched the chain.

Students and faculty of the Himanshu School on Malleswaram 4th Main Road had anxious moments on Monday morning after the school authorities received a call saying there was a bomb on the school premises. Later, it was found to be a hoax call.
