Staggered holiday: power consumption down by 90 MW on day one

Special Correspondent

The reduction is less than the expected level

Peenya Industrial Area had its weekly holiday on Monday

BANGALORE: The first day of implementation of the staggered holiday system for industrial areas on Monday helped the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company to reduce the daily power consumption by about 90 MW.

Though this reduction is less than the expected reduction level of 120 to 130 MW, sources in the BESCOM said the response was not lukewarm considering the fact that it was only the first day of the beginning of the staggered holiday system. “It takes some time to create complete awareness among all the industries about the need to adhere to the new holiday system,” sources said.

On Monday, Peenya Industrial Area had its weekly holiday under the new system.

At present, the power consumption is very high during weekdays, but reduces by a great extent during Sundays when all the industrial establishments have weekly holidays on that day. Hence, the BESCOM is trying to evenly spread over the demand for power throughout the week through staggered holiday system under which major industrial areas in and around Bangalore will have their weekly holidays on different days of the week.

A schedule has been prepared by the BESCOM indicating the days on which different industrial areas will have to have their weekly holidays.
