Residents block road in Tirupur

Tirupur: Traffic along the College Road was disrupted for about 30 minutes following a road blockade by residents of Ward 25 on Monday.

They resorted to an agitation after water entered about 100 houses at Kumarappapuram, Kallampalayam and Samathanapuram areas during rain on Sunday night and in the early hours of Monday. The tenants said that they were forced to spent the nights in their homes in sewage-laden water every time sky opened up, owing to poor drainage facilities. They alleged that storm water drains in the area were reduced to “scraps” as it had been encroached upon by commercial establishments.

“Though we have raised the issue with the Corporation officials concerned on many occasions during the last two years, no action has been taken to remove the encroached structures till now,” residents pointed out.

As the situation turned volatile, police and Corporation officials rushed to the spot.

The agitators softened only after they got an assurance that steps would be taken to drain off the rainwater stagnating in the area without any delay.

Heavy rain

Heavy rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, disrupted life in many parts of the city on Monday throwing transport system out of gear with roads and residential areas being flooded.

Since the storm water rains were not unclogged properly by the Corporation officials prior to the onset of monsoon, residential colonies adjacent to College Road were submerged causing hardship to office- goers and students in the area.

Traffic moved in a snarl’s pace along Tirupur-Erode road owing to flooding, once the skies opened up. The disaster management and mitigation department sources said that Tirupur received 58 mm rain during the last 24 hours ended at 8.30 a.m. on Monday. Following is the rainfall recorded at various places during the same period: Avinashi -55 mm; Udumalpet – 14 mm.
