One lakh saplings to be planted in 250 villages

TIRUCHI: Towards increasing the green cover and safeguarding the environment, Bharathidasan University will involve over 20,000 NSS volunteers to plant one lakh saplings in 250 villages on October 21 across eight districts in its jurisdiction.

With the saplings provided by Isha Yoga Centre under its Pasumai Karangal Programme, the volunteers will plant them simultaneously in villages between 10.30 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. The Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko will plant saplings on the university premises.

K. Kanagaraju, NSS-Coordinator, Bharathidasan University, said the highest number of 32,000 saplings will be planted in Tiruchi district, followed by 26,000 in Thanjavur district, 12,000 in Nagapattinam district, 10,000 each in Pudukottai and Tiruvarur districts, 8,500 in Perambalur and Ariyalur districts, and 5,500 in Karur district.

Each volunteer will plant five saplings. The digging work is in progress.

Since all the villages are adopted ones, the 250 NSS Programme Officers of the 95 colleges have assured to follow up the initiative and nurture the growth of the saplings.

Students will be provided with saplings to be planted at home. Saplings will also be planted on college campuses.

Within Tamil Nadu that has the highest number of NSS volunteers in the country, Bharathidasan University ranks top among other State universities with 27,800 volunteers.

The Premier Lions Club has taken the responsibility of transporting the saplings raised in various centres to 95 colleges in the eight districts. Mr. Kanagaraju handed over the saplings to NSS volunteers of the Srimathi Indira Gandhi College last week.
