MADURAI: The Madras High Court Bench here on Monday dismissed a bail petition filed by former MLA K. Murugavel Rajan and 12 others, who were charged with rioting, trespass and criminal intimidation when they allegedly attempted to enter Uthapuram on September 18. Justice K.N. Basha also refused anticipatory bail to 29 Dalits, who were accused of indulging in violence at Uthapuram, near here, on October 1, following a dispute with another community over painting a temple wall. The judge said it would not be appropriate to grant the relief considering the gravity of the offence, and the fact that it was a caste clash in which three policemen were injured and six country-bombs recovered.
