MADURAI: Legal action will be initiated only against those persons charged with specific offences in the Uthapuram violence, said District Collector S. S. Jawahar here on Monday. The Collector, Superintendent of Police M. Manohar and revenue officers held talks with the representatives of both the groups of Uthapuram on Sunday in a bid to restore peace in the village, where a wall had been erected to deny Dalits access to areas of common use. The officials assured to provide all welfare assistance and convene such meetings involving elders from the village, which would put an end to the animosity between the Dalits and the caste Hindus. As a first step towards building confidence, an assurance was given that police or any other authority would not harass people and that they need not apprehend any trouble. The Collector advised the people not to get carried away by rumours. The Usilampatti RDO would study the comments or suggestions or grievances of both the groups and redress them in the next round of peace talks, it was agreed at the meeting. The Collector assured all support for the development of the village. Mr Manohar said that he could be contacted any time by the villagers directly, an official press release said. Among other officers, Collector PA (General) Shanti, Usilampatti RDO Appavoo and Usilampatti Deputy Superintendent of Police S. Balasubramanian participated in the meeting.
