Taxi, auto strike on November 5

Special Correspondent

Kozhikode: Drivers of taxis and autorickshaws will go on a State-wide strike on November 5 if the government does not concede their demand for an increase in auto-taxi fares by then.

A spokesman of the Kerala State Motor Workers Coordination Committee said here on Monday that there would be a strike on November 5 if the government did not announce the “promised” increase in fares on or before October 31.

The committee held the government responsible for the proposed strike since, in its view, an increase in fares had been long overdue because of the sharp rise in prices of fuel, spare-parts and insurance premium. The government had discussed the demand with auto-taxi drivers’ representatives in Thiruvananthapuram on July 28. On September 2 another meeting was called and the committee was assured that the demand would be placed before the Cabinet for approval and necessary orders issued. However, the government order had not been issued.
