‘Vote bank’ politics threat to unity: Venkaiah Naidu

Parties demanding judicial inquiry into Delhi encounter flayed

Don’t think of alliances at this stage, cadre told

Party ready to support Bill on Telangana: Naidu

HYDERABAD: Former BJP president M. Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said “vote bank politics” was posing a threat to the country’s unity and integrity. He hit out at leaders of some political parties for demanding a judicial inquiry into the recent Delhi encounter.

Addressing the party’s State executive here, he said “pseudo secularists”, who pursue vote bank politics, were trying to create a controversy over the encounter in which a “good police officer” had died.

SP leader targeted

Stating that terrorists had no religion, he lambasted Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh and Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Milla University for their statements on the incident. Mr. Naidu claimed that winds were blowing in favour of the party and declared that it would suppress terrorism with an iron hand if voted to power at the Centre. Urging the cadres not to think of alliances at this stage, he advised them to organise agitations on people’s issues from the booth level.

He said the party was ready to support a bill on Telangana if it was introduced in the current session of Parliament. He demanded the Congress to clarify whether it favoured the State’s bifurcation. Referring to the Left parties’ move to join hands with the Telugu Desam for the next elections, he dubbed it as ‘rank opportunism’.

EC decision welcomed

Welcoming the Election Commission’s decision to conduct Jammu and Kashmir elections, he expressed confidence that nationalists would achieve a resounding victory.

Advani to address

State BJP president Bandaru Dattatreya said former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani would address a public meeting here on November 13 as part of ‘Vijay Sankalp Yatra’. He said there was a political vacuum in the State and urged the cadres to ensure that the party emerged a strong force in the 2009 elections.
