Shoranur-Mangalore line will be electrified, says Velu

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu has said that works estimated at Rs. 18 crore will be completed at the Kozhikode railway station by 2009-end.

At a function to lay the foundation stone for the Calicut Cultural Centre here on Saturday, he told presspersons that the Railways had sanctioned Rs. 9 crore for the railway station this year. He said 90 per cent of the Shoranur-Mangalore line had been doubled. The Commissioner of Railway Safety would have to certify the completed line. The double line would be electrified. The Minister said an updated survey for the proposed Thalassery-Mysore rail route was progressing. The line should not pass through forests.

More coaches

He said more coaches would be added to passenger trains in view of the rush. The second entry to the Kozhikode railway station on the southern side would be a comprehensive one with parking lots and two ticket counters.

Mr. Velu said shortage of skilled workers delayed the work on railway overbridges and others in north Kerala.

Also, contractors had been dropping works as steel prices were on the rise. The Minister promised to look into the demand for making the Kannur-Yeswantpur train run daily instead of the present thrice a week. Earlier, Kerala Industries Minister Elamaram Karim listed the demands for railway development, such as electrification, development of the railway station, more long-haul trains from here and extension of services of trains such as Venad Express and Janashatabdi to Kozhikode.
