CUTTACK: Mortal remains of Barrister Govind Das were consigned to flames at Satichoura crematorium here on Saturday morning as hundreds of grief-stricken friends, relatives and well-wishers bade a tearful farewell to one of the leading lawyers of the State. Barrister Das, who was also known widely for his literary activities and affable personality passed away on Friday night at a private hospital here after a protracted illness. He was 78 and is survived by wife Shanti Das, a son and a daughter. Several judges of State High Court, senior advocates and eminent persons of the city visited his house in Market Nagar last night to pay their last homage to the departed soul. People in large numbers thronged his house on Saturday morning to pay their homage. Among those who paid their tributes to Das this morning include his friend State Governor M.C.Bhandare with whom he started his legal profession in Supreme Court. “I have lost a dear friend. He was great in many ways. Apart from being a great lawyer, he was a great writer and a great human being also”, the Governor said after expressing deep condolence to Barrister Das. Born on June 30, 1930 in Jajpur district, Barrister Das had his education in Cuttack, Kolkata and Great Britain. He started his legal profession in Supreme Court and later moved to Orissa High Court. During his illustrious career, he was appointed as State advocate general twice and was elected as president of Orissa High Court Bar Association. Besides his legal acumen, Barrister Das was also an eminent writer both in Oriya and English languages. Among his literary masterpieces, his novel “Amabasyara Janha” is widely acclaimed across the State. He had also penned several short stories, poetries and travelogues too. For his noted contributions in literary field, Das was also honoured with several awards and sammans.
