No match for the original ‘Karz’

Himesh Reshammiya and Shewta Kumar in a still from ‘Karzzz’

Film: Karzzz

Cast: Himesh Reshammiya, Shewta Kumar, Urmila Matondkar, Danny

Direction: Bhushan Kumar

All that glitters is not gold. But it glitters nevertheless! With his innocent looks and smile the new age Monty (Himesh Reshammiya) of the new “Karzzzz” rocks! Yes, he rocks your mind with his repeat stage shows without giving the audience any time to relax.

Debutante Shewta Kumar is no match to the innocent and coy Tina Munim from Subhash Ghai’s “Karz”. Shweta should have learnt to emote a bit before facing the camera.

And how much we wished Himesh had taken some classes in it too! Urmila Matondkar in her flowing gowns and effective make up takes the cake.

She is more glamorous than Simi Garewal in the original but less dignified. Well, can you expect a princess breaking into ‘tandoori nights’ song in a shady restaurant? Danny as Kabira (Tina’s uncle) who thrives on movie dialogues for his oratory is brought in to bring some lighter moments with two ‘chamchas’ called Mogambo and Sambha. But it is Asrani in his cameo who proves much of a comic relief in the tragic tale of love, betrayal and reincarnation.

The story is given a twist to trigger interest. It has stunning stage décor minus great choreography and also foreign locales (Kenya and Cape Town). But it does make you shed a tear in the emotional scenes when Monty reunites with his sister (Though you wonder why she is as young even after 25 years) and mother (Rohini Hattangadi).

Go for it if you like Himesh Reshammiya. Rest assured, you wouldn’t connect to the cult thriller by watching him.
