Mumbai: One of the popular competitions in the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) calendar before the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Cooch Behar Trophy for the Under-19, the Sportstar Trophy will be inaugurated next Tuesday by Chandrakant Pandit, former India wicketkeeper, and Director MCA Academy, at the Elf-Vengsarkar Cricket Academy, Oval. The sixty-odd players who will represent the four teams in the 23rd Sportstar Trophy MCA Under-19 selection trial tournament will have the incentive to win attractive prizes from Nike and also fight for positions in the Mumbai Under-19 team for the Cooch Behar event. Awards from NikeNike will award prizes for the six man-of-the-match winners, player-of-the-tournament, best batsman, bowler, fielder and wicketkeeper of the selection trial event that will be played over three weeks at the Elf-Vengsarkar CA, Fort Vijay, Azad Maidan and Karnatak Sporting Association ground, Cross Maidan. The Sportstar will present the prestigious Ramakant Desai Trophy to the player of the tournament and also a full cricket kit. Dilip Vengsarkar, Vice-President, MCA appreciated The Hindu group’s continued support for the development of the city’s junior cricket. “The Sportstar Trophy helps in the talent-hunt process and hence has contributed immensely in the selection of Mumbai’s Under-19 team. We will celebrate the silver jubilee of the tournament in 2010 in a grand manner,” Vengsarkar said at the launch of the 23rd Sportstar Trophy at the C.K. Nayudu Hall, Cricket Club of India (CCI) on Thursday. The family of former MCA Secretary and Vice-President Bal Mahaddalkar will present a cash prize of Rs.1,000 to the best fielder. The teams: Vijay Merchant XI, Vijay Manjrekar XI, Dattu Phadkar XI and Khandu Rangnekar XI.
