Traffic affected as lorry hits bridge wall

Staff Reporter

KULITHALAI: Vehicular traffic was disrupted on the busy Tiruchi-Karur section of the NH 67 for nearly 10 hours on Wednesday as a lorry rammed the parapet of a narrow culvert bridge across the South Bank Canal at Vadhiyam near here.

The driver of the lorry that was proceeding from Karur to Ariyalur and the driver of a bus moving towards Karur tried to cross the narrow bridge at the same time.

Sensing danger the lorry driver tried to steer away only to hit the parapet of the bridge and break his front axle.

The bus suffered no damage at all.

Since the heavy blue metal laden lorry could not be towed away that easily without transferring the load, traffic had to be curtailed and re-routed through a circuitous route from Kulithalai. All vehicles suffered delay due to the accident.
