CVRDE (Chennai) wins team title

KOCHI: Chennai’s CVRDE, comprising M. Prem Sagar, B. Vijayan, N. Mohan and D.L. Kantha Rao won the team title in the DRDO South Zone chess tournament at the NPOL here.

T.V. Jose, from GTRE Bangalore, won the men’s open title, while Chennai CVDRE’s Prabha Jayaram won the women’s title.

Final placings: Team event: 1. CVDRE, Chennai (M. Premsagar, B. Vijayan, N. Mohan, D.L. Kantha Rao, 16.5 points); 2. 2. GRTE, Bangalore (K. Ashoka, T.V. Jose, A.R. Ravi, V.M. Looka, 16); 3. NPOL (M.K. Vijayan Pillai, Shoukath Ali, A.R. Rajendran, P.V. Lawrence, 13).

Men’s open: 1. T.V. Jose (GTRE, Bangalore, 5.5), 2. M. Premsagar (CVRDE, Chennai, 5), 3. K. Ashoka (GTRE, Bangalore, 45.).

Women’s open: 1. Prabha Jayaraman (CVDRE, Chennai, 3.5 pts), 2. Sumathi Kumar (CVDRE, Chennai, 3.5), 3. Girija Mani (DARE, Bangalore, 3).

Saran, Amrutha to lead

Saran Kumar and P.V. Amrutha will lead the Kerala boys and girls teams respectively in the 23rd National junior tennikoit championship which begins in Delhi on October 19.

Achuthan scalps five

Leg-spinner Achuthan took five for 18 as Globstar Telecom (Aluva) crushed host Maruti Homes TCC ‘B’ by eight wickets in a first phase second round match of the 58th Pooja all-India cricket tournament at the Tripunithura Palace Oval on Thursday.

The scores: Maruti Homes TCC ‘B’ 131 in 32 overs (Juno 40, Achuthan five for 18) lost to Globstar Telecom (Aluva) 133 for two in 28 overs (Ramkumar 45 n.o.).

Basketball meet

The 13th State veterans’ basketball championship will be held at Nehru stadium in Kottayam on November 1 and 2. The participating teams should report at the venue at 8 a.m. on November 1.

St. Xavier’s College posts win

Aluva’s St. Xavier’s College defeated Plaza, Paravur, 25-13, 25-12, 25-10 in the women’s section of the 13th Pappan memorial Ernakulam District volleyball championship at Chuttikkad, near Moothakunnam, on Thursday. .

Earlier, in the men’s section late on Wednesday, BPCL Kochi Refinery defeated Cochin Customs 25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21.

State meet

The State Civil Services meet will be held at various venues in Thiruvananthapuram from October 28 to 31.

Competitions will be held in powerlifting, badminton, table tennis, volleyball, basketball, football, cricket, swimming, athletics, wrestling, weightlifting and best physique.

More than 1,500 sportspersons representing the 14 districts will take part in the four-day meet. Government employees taking part in the meet should bring their eligibility certificates. The meet is being organised by Thiruvananthapuram district sports council.

TT championship

The Thiruvananthapuram district table tennis championship will be held at the COPS table tennis hall of the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram, on October 18 and 19. Interested should report at the venue at 3 p.m. on Oct. 18. Contact 9249533098.
