EMPOWERING: Ground being prepared to install a generator at Melapalayam. — TIRUNELVELI: With load shedding disturbing regular supply of drinking water, the Corporation is installing generators in pumping stations here. Since the six-and-a-half-hour load shedding disrupts water supply, the corporation administration decided to install generators in the pumping stations and booster stations housing ground-level and overhead water tanks. As the civic body did not have funds to purchase generators, three were hired and installed. “ We’ve now installed a 250 KVA generator at Thirumalaikozhunthupuram and a 63 KVA generator at Karuppanthurai pumping stations. Another generator with a capacity of 120 KVA has been installed at Samaathaanapuram booster station,” said Commissioner T. Mohan. Meanwhile, Collector G. Prakash came to the rescue of the Corporation by initiating steps to release Rs. 35.50 lakh from the State Finance Commission grant for the purchase of generators. The corporation has started preparing the concrete bed for the installation of a 120 KVA generator at the cost of Rs. 13 lakh at Melapalayam booster station, housing two overhead tanks with the capacity of 18 lakh litres and 6.80 lakh litres each, and a ground level tank that feeds water to the overhead tanks. Tenders are to be floated shortly for the purchase of generators for other pumping and booster stations. Accompanied by Executive Engineer, Tirunelveli Corporation, Narayanan Nair and Assistant Executive Engineer, Melapalayam Zone, T. Shanthi, Mr. Mohan inspected the ongoing ground preparation work for the installation of generator at Melapalayam on Thursday. “The generator at Melapalayam will be ready within 20 days to ensure regular water supply to the residents of this zone,” assured Mr. Nair and Ms. Shanthi, who later inspected the construction of a 10-lakh-litre overhead tank at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh on the Corporation’s Melapalyam zone office. “This tank, which is likely to be commissioned before Pongal 2009, will ensure adequate supply of drinking water to the tail-end regions of thezone,” Mr. Nair noted.
