Peter, Sajitha emerge the fastest

Coimbatore: K.S. Peter of PSG College of Arts and Science and S. Sajitha Banu of PSGR Krishnammal College for Women emerged the fastest in the 27th Bharathiar University inter-collegiate athletics championship at the Nehru Stadium here on Thursday.

Peter was arguably the best performer of the day. He stopped the clock at 10.8s for the 100m gold and in the process equalled his own record set last year. Later, he steered his team to a new meet record (43.6s) in the 4x100m relay.

A. Suresh of Saraswathi Thiyagaraja College (Pollachi) clocked 50s and shattered S. Srinivasan’s 23-year-old record (50.4s) in the men’s 400m.

Nandhini shines

Sajitha struck a golden double (100m & 400m) in the women’s section, but it was G. Nandhini of PSGR Krishnammal who stole the limelight with a leap of 12.16m for the new triple jump record. Her effort erased the existing mark of 12.05m set by D. Karpuramala of Kongu CAS set in 2004.

Karunya, PSGCAS win

Karunya University and PSG College of Arts and Science won the basketball and volleyball titles respectively in the Bishop Appasamy Memorial Trophy inter-collegiate tournaments at the Bishop Appasamy College courts on Thursday.

Riding on the brilliance of Dibumon, Karunya edged out host Bishop Appasamy 74-64 for the basketball title.

PSG scored a hard fought 25-18, 17-25, 25-22 win over Dr. NGP College of Arts and Science for the volleyball title.

The results: Final: Basketball: Karunya University 74 (Dibumon 24, Bobin 21, J. Chandran 13) bt Bishop Appasamy 64 (Alexander 19, Karthik 11, Mahesh 10).

Best player: Dibumon (Karunya).

Volleyball: PSGCAS bt Dr. NGP CAS 25-18, 17-25, 25-22.

Best player: Arun Prakash.
