Be partners in social sector, auditors told

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil on Tuesday asked auditors to partner the government in its social sector programmes and ensure that the objectives of social justice and equity were met.

Inaugurating the XXIVth Accountants General Conference here, Ms. Patil said issues relating to gender disparity, access to healthcare and quality education, rural development, employment and social security must be highlighted in audit reports. She pointed out that leaks in the delivery system could be curbed through effective audit and monitoring. Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai said the objective of this year’s conference was to focus on efficacy and efficiency in audit and accounts and thereby strengthen good governance, transparency and accountability. Since public audit was a continuing process, the CAG said, auditors were able to provide very useful inputs through regular reviews.
