Tenders were originally invited in 2006-07 for construction of facilities in 3 school buildings Audit report establishes undue file hold-up by officials of the Education Department NEW DELHI: The Education Department of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi finds itself in the dock over its officials’ failure to timely award tenders for construction of additional facilities in three school buildings that resulted in a loss of Rs.76.5 lakh to the civic body. The matter was brought to light at a meeting of the MCD Standing Committee on Wednesday. According to Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta, three agenda items relating to the matter were presented at the last Standing Committee meeting earlier this month and an audit enquiry to scrutinise them was ordered. The tenders for construction works had originally been invited in 2006-07. Mr. Gupta said: “The audit report has now been submitted and it clearly establishes that undue file hold-up by officials of the Education Department in awarding the tender resulted in re-tendering at increased rates after a delay of about a year, causing a loss of Rs.76.5 lakh to the civic body.” “By now the schools would have been ready, but due to delay in awarding tenders before the expiry of their validity, more money would now be required to complete the construction. The audit report has been forwarded to Municipal Commissioner K. S. Mehra and an inquiry ordered to fix responsibility in the matter. Strict action would be taken against the errant officials,” Mr. Gupta added. The works included construction of new classrooms, halls, toilets and other activity rooms at the municipal corporation primary schools in Pul Prahladpur, Masihgarh and Singhola.
