Court forms panel to monitor education for special kids

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the Delhi Government’s Education Secretary to suggest means to improve the quality of education imparted to physically-challenged students in schools run by the government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Setting up the committee, a Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice A.P. Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar said other members of the body would be representatives of the State Government, the MCD, the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Delhi Cantonment Board.

The Bench passed the direction on a public interest litigation by a non-governmental organisation alleging that there was absence of trained teachers for the physically-challenged students studying in schools run by the government and the local body.

Barrier-free

The petition said that apart from the absence of trained teachers, the students also did not enjoy a barrier-free environment in these schools.

There was also an acute scarcity of special books and equipment required for the physically-challenged student, the petitioner submitted.

Counsel for the petitioner, Ashok Aggarwal, urged the Court to direct the respondents to appoint forthwith trained teachers qualified in sign language or Braille in their schools to teach the students.
