Elocution competition on World Food Day

Staff Reporter

50 schools are expected to take part in it

NEW DELHI: To mark World Food Day, Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti in collaboration with the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations is organising a special inter-school elocution competition at its Tees January Marg premises here this Thursday.

Titled “Food security and the challenges to climate change”, the theme of the World Food Day this year assumes significance in the backdrop of rising costs of food worldwide. People everywhere are affected, and the poorest are the hardest hit. Changing weather patterns and rising demand for bio-fuels are also part of the problem. Fifty schools from Delhi and the National Capital Region are expected to take part in this elocution competition. Besides the elocution competition, a special issue of The Yamuna, the children’s newspaper of the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, will be released at the programme. The children who are representing different schools and are part of the Gandhi Media Literacy Programme have brought out the newspaper that focuses on food security and the challenges of climate change.

The FAO Representative in India and Bhutan, Dr. Gavin Wall, will deliver a speech on the FAO perspective on food security and climate change. An introduction to World Food Day will be given by the Assistant FAO Representative, Dr. Gopi Ghosh.

The editor of The Yamuna, Rijuta Lamba, will share the experience of her team to bring out the World Food Day special issue.
