Ivory worth lakhs seized
New Delhi: Uttarakhand forest officials have seized over 5 kg of ivory estimated to be worth lakhs of rupees from a 25-year-old youth in the hilly Kotdwar area of the State.
“A case under Wildlife Protection Act (WPA) has been registered against Nav Bahar Singh Saini, a resident of Lakargram in Kandi Khata in Kotdwar region for possession of the ivory,” a wildlife official from Uttarakhand said.
The brother of the accused managed to flee from the spot eluding a trap laid to arrest them by a forest team led by Kotdwar wildlife warden S.P. Singh on Tuesday night, he said.
The seizure has come close on the heels of recovery of 10 kg of elephant molar teeth from three persons in Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh three days ago.
Ramesh Pandey, deputy director of the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) said details of Saini have been sought and his role in the recent case where molar teeth of elephants were seized from UP was being investigated.
Last week, 10 kg of molar teeth of elephant was seized fromBijnor.
Expressing concern over the rampant illegal ivory trade in the hilly States, Mr. Pandey emphasised on intelligence sharing between various stakeholders to curb the crime. — PTI
