Sri Lanka ‘A’ takes first innings lead

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Sri Lanka ‘A’ hit back on the second day to gain the first innings lead, while Hyderabad failed to go past Andhra in spite of a fine unbeaten century by Abhinav Kumar 115 (9x4, 5x6) in the quadrangular cricket tournament matches, here on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka removed both openers Robin Uthappa (48) and Goutham (22) at the overnight score of 72 for no loss and had Karnataka on a leash. A 68-run stand for the sixth-wicket between Bharath Chipli 30 (4x4) and Devraj Patel (21) saw the team finish its first innings at 175 in reply to Sri Lanka’s first innings total of 224.

Leg-spinner Jeevan Mendes picked up four wickets conceding only 19 runs off 11 overs, while medium-pacer Chanaka Welagedera had three and Akalanka Ganegama picked up two for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka was 112 for three in its second innings at stumps.

Hyderabad made 324 for six in reply to Andhra’s 369 for seven.

Useful stand

Abhinav was involved in a 122-run unbroken partnership for the seventh wicket with Vijay Goud 31 (1x4, 1x6) after Goutham Reddy 35 (5x4) and Roland Rodrigues 47 (8x4) added 77 for the second-wicket.

Leg-spinner M. Suresh Kumar claimed three wickets and medium-pacer D. Kalyan Krishna picked up two wickets to deny Karnataka the lead.

The scores: Sri Lanka 224 & 112 for three in 28 overs vs. Karnataka 175 in 68.4 overs (Robin Uthappa 48, Jeewan Mendes four for 19); Andhra 369 for seven vs. Hyderabad 324 for six in 90 overs (Abhinav Kumar 115 n.o., Roland Rodrigues 47).
