TAMBARAM: A final year college girl, who was the target of a chain-snatching duo, acted swiftly and helped apprehend the offenders who tried to relieve her of gold chain in Selaiyur near here on Monday evening.

Police said Pushpa, studying in Madras Christian College at East Tambaram, was on her way to a browsing centre after classes, when two men on a motorcycle intercepted her.

One of them attempted to grab her gold chain, but she resisted.

Not only did she hold on to the chain, but also managed to grab his hand and called out for help at the same time. Listening to her cries for help, shoppers and residents rushed to the spot and managed to overpower the two men who tried to flee from the spot.

A couple of policemen, on routine beat rounds near the area, rushed to the spot on information and took the youths to the police station.

Police said investigations revealed that Venkatesan and Parthasarathy were first-time offenders. They hailed from Tiruvannamalai district and were staying in Kovilambakkam.

One of them was a mason and the other an electrician. One of them recently purchased a motorcycle for Rs.5,000 and to make up for the amount, they decided to try their hand at robbing women of gold chains, police added.
