Seven, including four children, injured in Kanpur explosion

Kanpur: Seven people, including four children, were injured when a crude bomb exploded near a shop in Colonelganj area here on Tuesday evening.

The country-made bomb, wrapped in a polythene bag and placed on a bicycle, went off at around 6:45 p.m., SSP Hari Ram Sharma said.

It was not a terror attack but the handiwork of anti-socials, he said.

Uttar Pradesh Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Brij Lal also asserted that the explosion was not a terror attack.

The injured included four children playing near the scene. The blast took place near a general merchant’s shop, the SSP said.

A red alert was sounded after the explosion, which shattered window panes of several shops and houses.

The owner of the bicycle, which was parked in front of the shop, was not yet known, IGP (Kanpur) S.N. Singh said, adding that a hunt had been launched to trace him.

Five-year-old Ravi, Twinkle (8), Mansi (9), Krishna (11), Punnu Gupta (20), Jeevan Lal (55) and Shanta Devi (65), injured in the blast, were admitted to hospital. — PTI
