ARIYALUR: Grasim Industries honoured 90 academic achievers of government schools in Ariyalur and Udayarpalayam educational districts with cash awards amounting to Rs. 1.5 lakh and certificates at a function organised in the Government Higher Secondary School in Ariyalur on Monday. S. Natarajan, Joint Administration Chairman and Unit Head, Grasim Industries, said the cement industry was executing its corporate social responsibility in 3,700 villages throughout the country. The industry runs 41 schools and 16 hospitals and spends Rs. 25 crore every year for educational development, he said. Lauding the gesture, Collector R. Sudalaikannan, who presided over the event, said helping and encouraging poor students in their educational development was a noble initiative. He termed as a myth the perception that quality of education was low in government schools and high in private institutions. With the support of dedicated teachers, government schools were performing well, he said, urging philanthropists to make similar gestures. The Collector stressed that physical activities were as much important as academic progress for students in the competitive scenario and called upon parents and teachers to ensure the physical well being of the students. Watching television, though useful for knowledge development and increasing awareness of happenings in the world, was hazardous if long durations were spent for the purpose. Chief Educational Officer R. Mallika, District Educational Officer S. Thangavelu, Revenue Divisional Officer K. Devarajan, and senior officials of Grasim Industries including J. Sethu, General Manager – HR and Administration, offered felicitations.
