PUDUKOTTAI: A sum of Rs. 24.70 crore has been sanctioned under the ‘Sarva Siksha Abhiyan’ for the district during the current financial year.

The fund, among other things, will be utilised for setting up of School Resource Centres (Rs.2.72 crore), construction of additional class rooms and buildings (Rs. 4.70 crore), maintenance of school buildings(Rs.1.11 crore) and adoption of new learning methodology (Rs. One crore).

The highlight of this year’s programme is a special residential bridge course for the benefit of the mentally disabled children. The Thai Trust, a Pudukottai-based non-governmental organisation, had been entrusted with the responsibility of educating 40 such children.

The Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests, S. Regupathy, while presiding over a meeting of the District Education Committee on Monday, said that the district accounted for 496 out-of-school pupils, of whom 79 had been admitted to the regular stream of education. This apart, 67 students had participated in summer camp. Mr. Regupathy said three class rooms would be constructed for 95 schools, including 70 panchayat union primary schools which were recently upgraded into middle schools. A proposal for a similar infrastructure for another 105 schools had been sent to the government.

The District Collector, Reeta Harish Thakkar and the Chief Educational Officer (SSA), T. Periyasamy, participated in the meeting.
