Kumbabhishekam of Madurai temple scheduled for April 8

MADURAI: The kumbabhishekam of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple here will be performed on April 8.

Around 80 per cent of the renovation work, taken up at a cost of Rs. 9 crore, has been completed.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister K.R. Periakaruppan said temple trustees and officials were confident of completing the work at the earliest.

‘Balalayam,’ marking the commencement of renovation, was done in October last. The kumbhabhishekam was performed last in 1995. Of the three cracks detected at various pillars, two had been repaired, and repairs to the last one were in progress, he said.

As for the renovation work at other temples, the Minister said that of the total 2,400 temple tanks in the State, half of them had been desilted, and the work was under way in the rest. Around 300 temple cars of the total of 962 needed repairs, and Rs. 10 crore had been allotted. The HR and CE Department was closely coordinating with the Local Administration and Tourism Departments to provide more amenities to devotees, Mr. Periakaruppan said.
