Plea for extra time in public exams under study

Shastry V. Mallady

Already, 10 minutes have been provided for reading question paper

Five more minutes sought to fill students’ data in answer sheets

Final call after further discussions with officials, says Minister

Thangam Thennarasu

MADURAI: Students’ request for five more minutes of extra time in Class X and Plus Two State Board examinations is under active consideration of the State government.

The plea, if given the nod, will be in addition to the 10 minutes being provided from last year exclusively for reading the question paper.

According to top officials in the Department of School Education, the issue was discussed during a brainstorming session convened by the government recently to discuss examination reforms.

Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu told The Hindu here on Tuesday that a plea had been made to provide five more minutes to fill students’ data in answer sheets during public examinations. “There was a feeling that the effective time duration for examination should be either three hours or two-and–a-half hours. The five minutes was sought for writing particulars like student’s name, registration number, examination centre…etc..”

Mr. Thennarasu said the government would take a final call after further discussions with officials. According to him, opinion was divided on providing the additional five minutes apart from the 10 minutes already given.

The meeting held in Chennai was attended by senior officials from Department of School Education and the Department of Examinations.
