SAI writes off NSF dues

NEW DELHI: The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has written off dues amounting to Rs. 3.51 crore standing in the names of the National Sports Federations (NSFs).

The Governing Body of SAI, which met here on Tuesday under the chairmanship of the Union Sports Minister M.S. Gill, decided to underwrite this amount outstanding since 1991. The dues, up to March 31 this year, pertained to unpaid rent, electricity and water charges owed by several NSFs that had their offices at the Nehru Stadium and other facilities owned by SAI.

The SAI stated on Tuesday that this was being done as a “special one-time gesture” so that the federations could divert the amount to promotion of their respective sport.

The meeting sanctioned the laying of smaller synthetic hockey turfs across the country. Initially, there would be 20 such turfs. Many Olympians had in recent times suggested laying of such turfs.

The meeting also cleared a long-standing proposal to have imported Maplewood flooring for the multi-purpose hall at the SAI Central Regional Centre at Bhopal. — Special Correspondent
